Summary: Every episode is a seperate story within its own so I'll just summarize the basic episode structure.
Each episode begins with a person, who is extremely upset. They are being picked on or there is someone making their life miserable. The person hears people gossiping about a "hot-line to hell." This is a website that can only be reached at midnight with people who want revenge. If you type the name of your antagonist hell girl (Jigoku Shoujo) will bring them to hell.
The person goes strait home and accesses this page, and hell girl (Who's name is Enma Ai) comes to visit them. She looks like she's 11 years old and has blood red eyes and is wearing a sailor school uniform for no explained reasonXD Anyways she gives her client a straw doll with a red string around her neck. She explains to them that if they remove that string she will carry their antagonist directly to hell, BUT!!!! If she does the client has to pay her. When they will also be taken to hell, But after they die of course. At this point she usually gives them a taste of hell with burning fire or crazy hands dragging them into the ground to scare the crap out of themXD
Now the client is a little hesitant to do this because they don't want to go to hell. They keep the doll, but decide to see if life will get better first. Usually by the next day or too their antagonist will do something unthinkably evil that just pushes the client of the edge. They remove the string and Ai and her servants... (ehhh sidekicks???) come and torture the antagonist first and scare him to death. Then they ask if he will apologize for his wrong-doings (to which the answer is always no), then Ai drags them to hell and rows them into the gates of hell on the river stix.
The episodes can get a bit repetitive after a while, many of the same scenes are even re-used, but there are quite a few intersting episodes that make this series worth watching. Although this is "horror" its not really to frightening thoughXD
The funny part about this show is all (*most...) these people's problems could easily be solved by good counceling or the lawXD But no, they all decide the only answer is to sell their soul to send them to hell. Some of the plots are really stupid like "that person picks on me" or "jealous stalker" or "My dog was murdered" (@_@ they actually do that plot twice...)~ There are a few interesting episodes that make this show worth watching though^.^
Despite some of the repetitiveness there is a main plot that develops with a little girl that gets some sort of phychic connection with Ai, and her and her father try and stop her from taking people to hell. As a result Ai's past and the reason she is "Hell girl" is revealed. The second story is more about Ai's side kicks (Women in a japanese kimono, middle aged man, and hot guy with hair style like trowa's from gundam wing...), which isn't as intersting but still okXD The second season there is a creepy little girl that follows her around with big purple eyes...
On a side note the main reason to watch this show is Ai. She's totally awsomeXD Her catch phrases, while repeated in every episode never gets old, especially "Ippen, Shinde Miru?" ( How would you like to see what death is like?") *Cues Psycodelic Kimono flowers followed by screams of people being dragged to hell. Despite her calm demeaner she totally goes crazy in the end of the first season, she's really kick-ass when provokedXD
This show in whole reminds me of some weird combination of Boogiepop Phantom (minus the drugs they were on when making that showXD) plus death note (minus wanting to take over the world, and you can only write down one name)~ I wouldn't watch this all in one sitting, but I highly recomend this series^.^
