The story starts out with Yukino, the "perfect" high school girl. She puts all her efforts into being the most beautifull, likable, responible, athletic, intelligent girl in the entire school, but in reallity its all lies. She just does this because she's addicted to the attention she gets for her perfection. In reallity she has a very... "odd" personality and a bad temper.
Her first year in high school she was expecting this trend to continue, but in her class was another perfect being, Arima, who not only had all of her perfect traits, but came from a rich family and was in the kendou club. He even beat her #1 spot for incoming freshmen. Yukino makes it her goal in life to crush him at all costs. She goes all out studying, and eventually suprasses him at the #1 spot. As happy as she should have been she wasn't because it seemed Arima could care less.
To her surprise he confesses his love to her, which she promtly refuses. A few days later he visits her house to lend her a CD even though he was already rejected, and when the door is opened he is kicked by Yukino who was expecting her sisters. Not only was it an akward meeting by kick, but she's dressed like a total slob in sweats. Arima has discovered her true nature.
Yukino has a near nervous breakdown thinking her act will be revealed to the entire class and everyone will hate her, but a week goes by and Arima has yet to tell. At the end of teh week Arima approaches her and "Blackmails" her to do all his work or he'll reveal her secret.XD Even though this is an odd relationship Yukino begins to develop fealings for Arima. And eventually Arima admits that he still liked her all along, he just wanted an excuse to be around her. He also admits that his good natured perfection is also a lie.
With the start of the loving relatioship they decide to change, to become the real them, with no masks. The rest of the story is the hurdles they have to overcome to become their real selves.
This anime is the perfect mix of humor and drama in my oppinion. While most is light hearted comedy because Yukino is a freak~ there are also many serious complications in their relatioship. The relatioship is VERY thurougly described, lets just put it that way.
The animation is a bit oddXD For those who have seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, this is done by the same guy. Seriously, one of these days he needs to find a good accountant and get a 1/2 decent animation budgetXD While its tolerable in the beggining towards the end it gets worse, and there's lots of the "random object" screeshots" while people talk.
While I loved this anime The ending is a MAJOR dissapointment... because it isn't an ending. The last episode is about side characters, and if anything it opens up a new story yet it just ends.... Apparantly when the manga turned more serious the anime decided to be cut because they wanted more humor.
Ohhh well~ another manga to add to my list^.^ I've yet to read it myself.

I started to watch this series when it first came out on DVD in the states. I really liked what I saw, but then I heard what was coming and stopped watching before I became too addicted. It really is a shame what they did to this anime. o.O

In an 9 hour manga reading marathon I finally finished all 21 Volumes of Kare Kano!!!!! The anime Covers about 2/5 of the entire story~ Where then anime left off it gets much more serious And Actually covers "HIS Circumstances" XD
The story shifts to covering Arima's past and his family, and continues till the end of their high school career.
There's many tearjerking moments. Poor Arima really comes from an evil demented family Y_Y I have to say one of his family members made it onto my top 5 list of most evil fictional villains ever!!!! Some where Right between Sephiroth from Final fantasy and Eclair from Ouran! ... yes Eclair is on my evil villain list O_o
