Plot: In a post-apocalyptic world, Real Mayer (Re-l in some versions) is investigating a series of robots gone crazy from a virus called Cogito. The virus gives robots a sense of self, in essence, giving them human emotion. As her investigation progresses, Real catches a glimpse of a monster. Later, two of these "monsters" encounter her in her home.

The government does their best to cover up what Real is sure she witnessed. This leads her to chase down a man named Vincent, who clearly has something to do with at least one of the monsters, but isn't telling how or why. During Vincent's own travels, he acquires the favor of a child-like robot, Pino (a favorite character for many people).

The plot is confusing, convoluting, and often just stops making sense. There are random episodes thrown in that positively destroy any hope of making the plot cohesive. That's not to say this is a bad series. However, I would have cried if I'd had to wait week after week for it and got one of those episodes....

There are a multitude of references to psychology and philosophy. Shisen-subs provided and excellent translation for a while with really helpful episode notes at the end. I have few complaints with this series. Just be prepared to pay attention to every event. They're all important, even when you have no idea what's going on.
