The main character Haruhi has a very interesting personality, and on the first day of school she proclaims to her class "I have no interest in ordinary humans. If there are any aliens, time travelers, sliders, or espers here.. come join me. That is all!” Anything else completely bores her. Coincidently in front of her sits Kyon, a boy who had given up on all the supernatural wishes as a child and was supposebly content living a normal life, but he grows interested in Haruhi and tries to have some sort or conversation with her wich backfires with insults such as "Shut up!" "Moron!" "Be quiet!" "Who cares about that!?". Eventually they do begin to talk and she decides to make a school club (becuase she joined every club in the school already and claims they're boring so quite), wich she "forces" him to join.
THe club is called the "SOS Brigade" (Sekai wo Ooini moriagerutame no Suzumiya Haruhi no dan) wich means Save the world by Overloading it with Fun: Haruhi Suzumiya's Brigade. Eventually the club does accumulate memebers that enclude; Kyon, Haruhi, Yuki Nagato (an alien), Mikuru Asahina (a Time traveler), and Itsuki Koizumi (an esper). THey try and win more members by forcing one of the members to dress up in a... "bunny girl" costume and hand out flyers, but it never really works out to well. THe fun they have together you later discover is the most important factor in protecting the world from distruction. This is a short anime so if I say any more it would be giving away too much.
THe only other side note is these episodes aired completely out of order (intentionally), so its really weird to watch the first time. The first episode makes absalutely no sense, but is one of the most hilarious things ever Edit>.< 1. I said at the beggining Haruhi was the main character, but its actually all from kyon's perspective. 2. Please ignore my crappy spelling.
I actually liked it better. even though I was really confused at first. The first episode I almost stopped after becuase I had no idea what was going on>.< I'm glad I kept watching though^.^
Yeah the first episode, episode 0 almost killed Haruhi for me as well. Had I watched later in the day as opposed to in the morning I'm sure I would have deleted it without second thought....
Currently I've been reading the light novels of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and for anyone who cares they're very good as well^.^ Though I'm not done, most of what I read reminds me of back to the future on crackX_x Yeah for more confusing stuff~ THough for the most part the books go in order besides a few out of place stories. THere are also several important stories in the books that are mentioned in the anime seriesXD But never actually happen.
I've been hearing a rumor there's a second season planned, though I've yet to find any reliable source verifying it~_~ But if there was going to be one there is a lot of good material left in the books they could base it on.
I believe there are a total of 10 books right now (I'm not sure how many in the US though)~
I'm kinda surprised they're coming out in the US at all. I tried to watch this series. It didn't make sense even when I watched it in chronological order. o.O

lolXD Really~ Where are you still lost?
After watching it twice (in Airing order) I understood pretty much everything but the very first episodeXD (which the novels did an amazing job of filling in all the holes about that). Yeah for talking cats and lazer beams=)
The only thing that I remain confused about is episode where they show Yuki just sitting there reading for 1/2 the episodeXD...not so much confused about the actual story, just how the producers had the nerve to do that.
Something hinted throughout the first season of the anime, but ended up leaving out was~ *Spoilerish
Spoiler
An episode describing when Haruhi first got her powers on the night of Tanabatana 3 years ago when Kyon goes to the past and helps her write alien language on her middle school field. Its actually brought up a few times, and the Tanabatana tree is even in their roomXD The opening theme with the star is also relating to it.
Considering they left out one of the most important parts of the series I assume there'll be another season^.^
If there is a second season 90% of it will focus on Yuki and Kyon, not so much HaruhiXD *prays for a second seasonT.T
oh, hopefully the second season will mimic the Haruhi doujins with some delictable kyonXyuki action... I cant wait.
XD Here are some Images from the novels for some Yuki/kyon scenes. ...nothing weird thoughXD
Spoiler
Text under the first Image: Nagato was pulling my sleeve with her fingers. The tug was very soft, just like how much force one might use to pick up a newborn baby hamster.
Text under the Second: Kneeling down, Nagato not only touched my wrist softly with her lips, she even revealed her teeth.
=( They left out some of the cooler scenes being illistrated though~ Well that just makes me look more forward to a 2nd seasonXD
It won't live up to any doujins I don't thinkXD But there are some blushy scenes between the 2 because of something temporarily messing with Yuki's personality and she turns into a shy bookworm rather than an emotionless alien bookwormXD
Its more like 65% Yuki~ But still more than Haruhi or Mikuru it seemed for the next big events~
I wasn't lost or confused so much as annoyed. One episode, we have this list of characters. The next episode we have a new character, but no introduction to said character at any point in the series. >_< I like development and progression. This is more jerky and random. It's not bad, just not something I would seek out. I have a list of other things I'd rather watch.. (like Ouran!!)
